- Step 2. Each Day, identify three wins for the day.
- Step 3. On Friday, identify three things going well and three things to improve.
Step 1. On Mondays, Identify Three Wins for the Week
On Monday, write down three results that you want to achieve for the coming week. Write them down on a piece of paper so that you can easily review them whenever you want.
The most important question to ask yourself is, “If this were Friday, what 3 things would you want under your belt?”
Say your three goals for the week out loud. As you say your goals, try to simplify them. It may take a few tries. You want to say them as simple as possible so that they are sticky and that you don’t have to look them up. You want to be able to quickly rattle off your top three most important goals for the week, so that they are top of mind throughout the week.
Here are a 5 prompts that can help you identify your top three priorities for the week:
- What are three things you want to accomplish?
- What would the “win” be if you actually achieve your results?
- What MUST be done? … What SHOULD be done? … What COULD be done? (all based against what you want to accomplish)
- What are the worst things that if you don’t get them done this week, they are going to cause problems for you?
- How are you improving yourself based on what you learned from your Friday Reflection?
You know you are done when you have a clear mental picture of the 3 most important outcomes that you want to achieve for the week. Additionally, it helps if you know your big risks for the week, and you know your MUSTs vs. SHOULDs vs. COULDs.
Step 2. Each Day, Identify Three Wins for the Day
Each day, write down three results that you want to achieve for that day. Your three priorities for the day should help contribute to your three bigger priorities for the week.
Treat each day like a fresh start. Think of 3 outcomes for that day. You may have a bunch of activities and tasks, but think of the 3 most important results you want for that day.
By figuring out 3 outcomes for the day, you can easily prioritize all of your action items. The 3 outcomes are also your tests for success for the day. It’s how you set yourself up for a great day. It’s also how you can pick yourself back up if you fall off the horse.
Imagine each day figuring out the 3 best things you can do, and actually working on them. It’s simple and effective.
Step 3. On Friday, Identify Three Things Going Well and Three Things to Improve
To do Friday reflection, simply give yourself 10 or 20 minutes on Friday mornings to ask yourself two things:
- What are three things going well?
- What are three things to improve?
The goal is to carry the good forward and build better habits. You can use what you learn from Friday Reflection when you do your Monday Vision planning.
Before you answer the questions above, really reflect on your week. Did you do what you set out to do? If not, did you trade up for the right things? Did you get randomized? Did you bite off more than you can chew?
See what starts to happen? You start to notice your own patterns. This awareness becomes your advantage, when you use it to change what’s not working, and do more of what is working. It’s a simple way to keep improving your personal habits and streamline your results.
One of the most common patterns is to simply lose sight of what we set out to achieve for the week. That’s why identifying three priorities for the week during Monday Vision is so powerful. It gives us a target. While we can check ourselves against our goals throughout the week, Friday Reflection is where we step back and look at our overall productivity patterns and make adjustments.
The key to exponential results is to work on the right things, at the right time, the right way, with the right energy. With Friday Reflection, the overall goal is to improve your little loop of results: identify the value, carve out things you can do, make the time for it, use your best energy to amplify it, and streamline your habits to support you.
Use your Friday as a way to invest in yourself.
